I wonder, just as this young man might be, can we have a redo?
I wonder also as situations progress and people talk of change, what are we wanting to change in ourselves during this time of societal change? So far, in society, there are many options to choose from: health care, human services, personal rights, law enforcement, justice, preventing pandemics, global health….and others. What about in ourselves? What facets and characteristics internally need to change?
I posted an article on empathy by a fellow blogger, and it resounds in my mind like bells pealing in the night. We NEED more empathy like our bodies need air! And yet, empathy for others can elude us like a firefly in the dusk of nightfall. We can try and catch it, flittering around, we know of its location, but it takes an experienced person to find and hold onto. Remember those times? Barefoot, warm summer dusks, with a jar in hand and a hope and desire to catch just one.
Why is empathy so hard to find? Perhaps because it requires so much internal work.
Empathy requires we take action and put ourselves into the other persons situation. It requires we use our emotions. We must FEEL, we must SEE and we must ACT as if we know and feel. Sometimes, we DO know. Sometimes, true empathy comes from a deep place of “already been there.” But, it is not usually enough , for what person can truly experience that of another in the same way, time and manner….for God made us each to His own.
There is a song in the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” (Andrew Lloyd Webber,) that is called “Could we start again please.” This song has been in my head for two days. The words are so pertinent for todays situation. Could we start again? Please?
Is it possible for we, society, to “start again” to try and undo/redo that which has plagued the country and world for so long? I do not know.
The lyrics so recount now: ..” This was unexpected, what do I do now, could we start again please? I’ve been very hopeful so far, now for the first time I think we’re going wrong, hurry up and tell me, is this just a dream, could we start again please?” ( Andrew Lloyd Webber).
It is not the first time I have been thoughtful about our path. Spiritually, economically, sociologically, ecologically, it’s all been up for question for some time now, and I’ve lived long enough to see and weather many of the ebbs and floes time brings. My question to you, today, tonight, whenever you read this is this….Can we start again?
Think about it, let me know your thoughts, I’ll be sharing mine as well.
God Bless,
Tanny
